A hairdresser and an electrician have each been fined GH¢4,800 for their roles in carrying out an illegal abortion. The two were found guilty of unlawfully terminating a pregnancy, which is a criminal offense under Ghanaian law. The court imposed the fine as a penalty for their actions, warning that failure to pay could result in further legal consequences.

The Assin Fosu Magistrate Court has fined a 40-year-old hairdresser, Charlotte Asiedu, and a 21-year-old auto electrician, Tetteh, GH¢4,800 each for their involvement in an illegal abortion involving a 17-year-old girl. Asiedu was charged with carrying out an unlawful abortion after giving the girl a herbal mixture, while Tetteh, the girl’s boyfriend, was charged with aiding the crime. Both pleaded guilty before the court, presided over by Mr. Abdul Majid Iliasu.

According to the prosecution, led by Inspector Matilda Osaah Buabeng, the case was reported by Victoria Arthur, the victim’s mother, who lives in Assin Fosu. The victim, a final-year senior high school student, discovered she was 17 weeks pregnant while in school. During her break, she informed Tetteh about the pregnancy. Although he initially advised her to tell her mother, the girl, fearing the consequences, decided not to.

Instead, she requested GH¢200 from Tetteh to purchase abortion pills from a pharmacy. However, the pharmacist refused, citing the advanced stage of the pregnancy. Tetteh then sought help from a friend who introduced him to Asiedu. She agreed to help and prepared a concoction worth GH¢200 for the girl.

After consuming the mixture, the girl experienced intense abdominal pain and was taken to the St. Francis Xavier Hospital in Assin Fosu. Medical examinations revealed the fetus had died, and doctors were forced to induce labor.

Following the incident, the victim’s mother filed a complaint with the police, leading to the arrest and prosecution of Asiedu and Tetteh. Medical reports also indicated that the victim’s education has been put on hold due to the need for two major surgeries to save her life.
